December 23 (SeeNews) - France's Ecology Minister Segolene Royal on Thursday officially inaugurated a one-kilometre pilot solar road project in Tourouvre, the Orne department, in north-western France.
Construction started in October and the EUR-5-million (USD 5.22m) investment was financed by the Ministry.
In total, 2,800 square metres (30,139 sq feet) of Wattway solar road tiles were laid down. Their annual electricity generation is estimated at 280,000 kWh (roughly 800 kWh per day) or the equivalent to providing public lighting for a small town with 5,000 residents.

According to a presentation on French TV channel TF1, the revolutionary technology could provide power to light up electronic road signs, power traffic lights or even power the batteries of electric cars as they move on the road. If stored, the produced energy could power road lights at night and melt snowfall during winter.
Still, with an efficiency of 100 kWh per square metre, the solar road tiles are underperforming in generation, compared with rooftop solar installations whose average performance in France is about 137 kWh per square metre. In terms of costs, the difference is even wider, as the solar road tiles were initially priced at EUR 6/W while rooftop solar installations currently cost about EUR 1.3/W.
Volkswagen AG’s emissions-cheating scandal could involve more vehicles than previously acknowledged, and some new models built to meet the most stringent European emissions standards may still cheat, according to a European Union research body.
